4-day Inca Trail trek to Machu Picchu itinerary

DAY
01

Ollantaytambo – Km 82 – Wayllabamba – Ayapata

We will depart from Cusco (3,350 m) at 5:30 a.m., traveling through beautiful Andean landscapes with farmlands and traditional villages that preserve their ancestral customs. Our journey will take us to kilometer 82, the starting point of the famous Inca Trail, an ancient route that was part of the great road network of the Inca Empire.

After about three hours of walking, we will take a break for lunch in Hatunchaka (3,000 m), a small village where you can also buy water, snacks, or use the restrooms. Then we will continue to Wayllabamba (3,100 m), the last village on the route to Machu Picchu, and finally we will walk for another hour to Ayapata (3,300 m), where we will camp and spend the night surrounded by nature and tranquility.

02

Llulluchapampa – Warmihuañusca – Pacaymayu - Chaquicocha

With the first rays of sunlight, we will wake up surrounded by an Andean landscape full of mystery and beauty. We will begin our hike by ascending the Ayapata Ravine (3,300 m) and Lulluchapampa (3,850 m), until we reach the highest point of the route: the Warmihuañusca Pass (4,200 m), from where we will enjoy a spectacular view of the Nevado Verónica. This section, considered one of the most emblematic of the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu, represents a true spiritual journey between sacred mountains.

After enjoying the view, we will descend to the Pacaymayu Valley (3,500 m) for lunch and a short rest. Then we will continue the hike to Chaquicocha, where our camp is located, surrounded by history, nature, and the ancestral energy of the trail.

03

Chaquicocha – Runcuracay – Phuyupatamarka – Wiñayhuayna

This is one of the shortest days, but also one of the most impressive of the trek, thanks to the constant changes in landscape and ecosystem. In the morning, we will continue to the Phuyupatamarca Pass (3,600 m), where we will explore its archaeological center, known as “the city above the clouds.”

Then we will descend to our last camp in Wiñayhuayna (2,650 m), where we will enjoy lunch and spend the night. Before resting, we will visit the archaeological complex of Wiñayhuayna, a jewel of the Inca Trail, which connects history, nature, and spirituality in perfect harmony.

04

Wiñayhuayna – Machu Picchu – Cusco

At dawn, our porters will give us a breakfast to take with us. At 3:30 a.m. we will begin the walk with flashlights to the checkpoint, which opens at 5:30 a.m. From there, we will continue to the Sun Gate (Inti Punku, 2,780 m), where we will witness the majestic sunrise over Machu Picchu and Huayna Picchu. This moment is undoubtedly one of the most exciting of the Inca Trail.

At 8:00 a.m., we will take a guided tour of the citadel of Machu Picchu (2,400 m), exploring its temples, terraces, and mysteries in perfect harmony with nature. Afterwards, we will descend by bus to Aguas Calientes to enjoy lunch (not included) before boarding the train back to Ollantaytambo and continuing by bus to Cusco, arriving around 7:00 p.m.
