History of Parque Pino

Initially, the park was named Parque San Juan, in relation to the San Juan church, now known as the Church of the Virgin of Candelaria. This church has gained importance over time due to the devotion to the Virgin of Candelaria, the patron saint of Puno, and a central figure in one of Peru’s most important festivals.

On September 24, 1901, the monument to Manuel Pino was inaugurated. Manuel Pino was a distinguished lawyer who graduated from the then San Carlos University of Puno, now known as the National University of the Altiplano. Manuel Pino is remembered for his courageous act of patriotism when, in 1879, after Chile declared war on Peru, he chose to enlist as a private soldier instead of accepting a high-ranking position as a war auditor. His decision to join the defense battalion as a volunteer reflects his deep commitment to the national cause.

Similarly, the Church of San Juan Bautista, located in front of the park, is another landmark. The church is in the Neo-Gothic style and has witnessed the religious devotion of the people of Puno, serving as the backdrop for various Catholic celebrations.

Such as the Feast of the Virgin of Candelaria, one of the most important festivals in Peru.
